WHY ARE WE HERE?
- Nationwide, an estimated 15% of children and adolescents are overweight. In Los Angeles County, 21% of our children are overweight and an additional 19% are borderline.
- Overweight children are more likely to become overweight adults. Currently in California, 57% of adults are overweight or obese and 66% for African American adults and 71% Hispanic adults.
- Overweight and obesity contribute to about 300,000 deaths yearly in this country, a number that rivals deaths related to cigarette smoking.
- In addition, obesity is linked to a variety of chronic diseases, including Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and cancer.
Our goal is to increase the awareness of the prevalence of overweight and obesity in our youth and the corresponding rise of Type 2 diabetes. We address these issues by promoting healthy lifestyle habits, including eating more fruits and vegetables and creating active lifestyle habits.
- Eat 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables every day for your health.
- Adults, get active 30 minutes daily.
- Children and teens, enjoy 60 minutes of vigorous activity each day.
